That’s the kind of obsession with backward compatibility that made people willing to upgrade to Windows 95. If it finds SimCity running, it runs the memory allocator in a special mode that doesn’t free memory right away. Microsoft tracked down the bug and added specific code to Windows 95 that looks for SimCity. Here’s the amazing part: On beta versions of Windows 95, SimCity wasn’t working in testing. It worked fine on Windows 3.x, because the memory never went anywhere. Jon Ross, who wrote the original version of SimCity for Windows 3.x, told me that he accidentally left a bug in SimCity where he read memory that he had just freed. Microsoft obsessed about this, spending a big chunk of change testing every old program they could find with Windows 95. Nice new 32 bit API, but it still ran old 16 bit software perfectly. I believe this is the story OP mentioned. So, in short I can't get Fallout4 to run on F4se without CTD on the main menu, I'm missing Steam_api64.exeįallout has been my favorite game since it came out, but I'm honestly about done with this.EDIT: Was rushing, but updated with the exact quote here so people don't need to go digging :)

I reinstalled Steam hoping it would replace the missing file and it didn't. It's telling me that the Steam_api64.dll is missing.Īfter about 2 hours of searching all I can find are the sites to not download it from and a bunch of people asking how to fix this but nobody saying that they have fixed it, not without downloading something from some malicious site. I can run the F4se loader from the Common/FO4 but it will CTD soon after the main menu loads. exe and it just made a new copy of the loader, and it is set to show hidden files. Now F4SE (Which I also reinstalled) wont open due to not being able to find Fallout4.exe I can make a new file and customize a character once again but, the game will only run if I start Steam at admin and then run Fallout through Steam.Īttempting to run FO4 through my PC from anywhere results in the the loader repeating to ask me to hit play. I was having graphic issues and after spending months on trying to fix it I just reinstalled everything and got the game to finally work. Is it just me, or does it seem like there is more time spent trying to fix and make this game work than there is time spent actually playing it?
